Alexandrian mathematician and astronomer.

Best known for being the father of Hypatia of Alexandria.

His edition of Euclid's The Elements was an authority until well into the 19th century.

  • Born: c. 335 CE, possibly in Alexandria, Egypt
  • Died: c. 405 CE

Books and Papers

  • c 364: Produced an edition of Euclid's The Elements.
  • Produced commentaries on Euclid's Data and Optics.
  • Produced a important commentary on Ptolemy's Almagest, and two on his Handy Tables.
  • Catoptrica, which was at one point thought to have been written by Euclid.
