Not sure whether we've "sanctioned" the use of $*$ for $\times$ ... it's computerese, yeah, but I'd be wary of using it in a mathematical context as (a) it's not standard, and (b) it could confuse with other uses of $*$ (not that I can think of any standard uses of $*$ at the moment) and (c) there's already loads of symbols that can be used for multiplication, and even boring old juxtaposition would work here. --Matt Westwood 10:22, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
