I've noticed a few times someone has changed the notation $a \mid b$ to $a \backslash b$, which I've never encountered. The $\mid$ notation is ubiquitous in modern number theory.

Yes, that someone is me. Please read this page: Definition:Divisor. Ubiquitous it no longer is. --prime mover 00:19, 23 August 2011 (CDT)
This is just one of those pieces of house style that's grown up with the site. I've never been convinced that it accomplishes its goal of making the math more understandable since people aren't familiar with it, but as long as we link back to the definition when we use it, it's all good. --Alec (talk) 13:38, 23 August 2011 (CDT)
