Subject Matter

In this thesis, Bernhard Riemann analyses Dirichlet's $1829$ work on conditions to determine whether a function can be represented by a Fourier series.

Historical Note

This was the probationary essay required of Bernhard Riemann to allow him to be admitted to the position of Privatdozent, an unpaid lectureship position required at the time in order to be able to progress to the next level in the university system.

In it, Bernhard Riemann developed the concept of the Riemann integral.
