Historical Note
Haidao Suanjing was written by Liu Hui as a supplement to Chiu Chang Suann Jing ("Nine Chapters of Arithmetic").
However, during the Tang dynasty it was published separately and chosen to be one of the official mathematical texts for imperial examinations in mathematics.
It is named after the first problem in the book, which concerns the surveying of an island in the sea.
