Let $S$ be a surface in ordinary $3$-space.

Let $A$ and $B$ be points positioned in space so that $A$ is on one side of $S$ and $B$ is on the other side of $S$.

$S$ is a closed surface if there exists no curve in ordinary space joining $A$ and $B$ which does not intersect $S$.
