Definition

A gauge theory is a theory of fields in the context of physics in which the Lagrangian is invariant under local transformations according to Lie groups.

The theory is a modern form of James Clerk Maxwell's theory of electromagnetism.

Historical Note

The ideas behind gauge theory have been used by Simon Kirwan Donaldson to study the gemoetric and topological properties of $4$-dimensional spaces.

He has shown that their properties are fundamentally different from spaces of lower or higher dimension.
