Magnetism is a phenomenon of physics caused by the motion of electric charges.
Historical Note
The phenomenon known as magnetism was discussed by the Roman philosopher Lucretius in his De Rerum Natura in the $1$st century $\text {BCE}$.
He identifies certain mineral ores such as lodestone, which can attract nearby pieces of iron.
