- 1974: Gained a masters degree from Duke University
- 1978: Earned a doctorate in mathematics education from North Carolina State University
- 1978-83: Faculty position at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte
- 1983: Returned to North Carolina State University
- 1995: Fulbright scholar in Ghana
- 2000 to 2002: President of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics
- 2009: NCSU College Distinguished Award recipient
- 2010: Distinguished Alumni Award from the NCSU College of Education
