German military officer and mathematician, mainly known for his work in geometry.

  • Born: 13 May 1799 in Landsberg in East Prussia
  • 1815: Entered military service
  • 1822: Started service with $22$nd Infantry Regiment as $2$nd lieutenant
  • 1830: Posted as a teacher to Cadet Corps in Berlin
  • July 12, 1833: assigned back to $22$nd Infantry Regiment
  • June 12, 1843: Promoted to major
  • 1845: Transferred to General Staff
  • June 26, 1849: Promoted to department head
  • July 4, 1856: Received royal permission to wear the Order of Saint Vladimir, 4th class
  • Died: 24 April 1858 in Münster

Karl Ludwig Gerwien can be seen cited as Paul Gerwien, but this cannot be corroborated.

While his early works are attributed to one P. Gerwien, there is no evidence that P. stands for Paul, but instead is more likely to be an abbreviation of the honorific Pr. Lt. according to his rank of $2$nd Lieutenant.

Some citations refer to Karl Ludwig Gervien, but it is straightforward to ascertain that this is a mistake.
