It is defined as being the amount of capacitance of a capacitor between the plates of which an electric potential of $1$ volt appears when it stores $1$ coulomb of electric charge:
- $1 \, \mathrm F = 1 \, \mathrm C \, \mathrm V^{-1}$
that is, $1$ coulomb per volt.
