Let $\map f {Y, x}$ denote the regression of $Y$ on $X$.
The random variable $X$ is known as the cause variable.

The cause variable of a regression is also known as:
- the explanatory variable
- the fixed variable
- the predicated variable
- the predictor variable

It is also known as the independent variable.
However, this name is used in a wider context than regressions, and so is not endorsed on $\mathsf{Pr} \infty \mathsf{fWiki}$.
