Definition

A cryptarithm is a puzzle in which the digits in an arithmetical calculation have been replaced by letters.

The object of the exercise is to work out what letter stands for what digit.

In many cryptarithms, the letters form meaningful words or even phrases in natural language, but this is not an essential feature.
