Definition

The statvolt is the CGS unrationalised electrostatic unit of electromotive force and electric potential.

It is defined as being the difference in electric potential between two points of an electrical conductor that will impart $1$ erg of energy per statcoulomb of electric charge that passes through it.

Symbol

$\mathrm {statV}$

The symbol for the statvolt is $\mathrm {statV}$.

Its $\LaTeX$ code is \mathrm {statV} .

Also known as

The statvolt is also known in older sources as the electrostatic unit of potential.

Source of Name

This entry was named for Alessandro Giuseppe Antonio Anastasio Volta.

Linguistic Note

The word statvolt is a shortened form of abstatvolt, where the idea was that the prefix abstat should stand for absolute electrostatic and mean belonging to the CGS-ESU (electrostatic cgs) absolute system of units.
