Inertia (Physics)
Inertia is the tendency of a body to maintain the same velocity in the absence of an external force, in accordance with Newton's First Law of Motion.
Equivalently put, inertia is the resistance of a body to a change in its motion.
Inertia is equivalent to mass.
Inertia of Hermitian Matrix
Let $\mathbf H$ be a Hermitian matrix.
The inertia of $\mathbf H$ is an ordered triple of integers comprising:
- the number of positive eigenvalues of $\mathbf H$
- the number of negative eigenvalues of $\mathbf H$
- the number of zero eigenvalues of $\mathbf H$
in that order.
