Definition
Let $\LL$ be a line of (terrestrial) latitude.
Let $\DD_1$ and $\DD_2$ be two meridians.
The departure of $\LL$ is the length of $\LL$ between the points where $\LL$ intersects $\DD_1$ and $\DD_2$.
