IEEE arithmetic is a standard for floating-point arithmetic for use in digital computers.
The standard specifies, among other things:
- Floating-point number formats
- Results of the basic floating-point operations.

Historical Note
The IEEE standard was published in $1980$ by the Computer Standards Committee of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' Computer Society.
