Definition
Let $M$ be a machine.
The load on $M$ is an external force applied to a particular part of $M$ which is to be affected by the effort applied to $M$.
Hence it can be considered as the (reactive) force exerted by $M$ which is to be overcome by the (active) force exerted on $M$.
